The Florida apple snail occurs throughout Florida wetlands and lakes, except for in the western Florida panhandle. Apple snails are not found to the west of Marianna, because these areas lack a limestone bedrock.

Apple snails sold in pet stores usually are from South America, even though they may look very similar to Florida apple snails. However, nearly all snails sold for aquariums are not native snails.

Unfortunately, some of these exotics have been released in to canals, lakes, and springs in Florida.

Exotic snails should not be released since they may harbor diseases that may harm native apple snails or they may compete for food and space.
