Many-lined Salamander
Stereochilus marginatus

Appearance: Small aquatic salamander characterized by a series of dark longitudinal lines down the body.  6.4-9.5cm (2.5-3.75in) total length.  Generally dark brown in color.  Belly yellow with dark specks.

Habits and Habitat: Small pools, swampy wetlands under dead leaves and/or logs. Sometimes found near water under debris. Eats aquatic invertebrates.

Reproduction/Egg Description: Autumn breeder. Elaborate courtship behavior, as typical of Plethodontid salamanders.  Oviposition occurs in winter. Eggs released one at a time and attached to vegetation. Clutch size estimated at between 6 and 92 eggs.

Distribution and Abundance: Restricted to the Southeast Coastal Plain from South Virginia to North Florida.

SE ARMI Index Sites: Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.
